Japanese Mikan Jelly

The kid in me loves these delicious and fun orange jellies from Japan. Light and refreshing, these treats are perfect for warm summer afternoons in the backyard.

  • teaspoons Agar-Agar Powder
  • 3 Tablespoons hot water
  • 1 can mandarin oranges
  • 1 cup mandarin orange syrup from the can
  • 3 Tablespoons sugar

Cut the gelatin sheets into 1/2 inch strips. Using a double broiler, dissolve the gelatin strips in 3 tablespoons of hot water. (If you don’t have a double broiler, place a cup of water in a saucepan with a slightly larger heat-resistant glass bowl resting on top, trapping the steam below) When the gelatin has completely dissolved, add the sugar and whisk until it has completely dissolved as well. Combine the orange syrup with the gelatin syrup and mix well.

Portion out the mandarin oranges in small serving glasses, then pour the gelatin mixture to completely cover the oranges. Place in the refrigerator, allowing the gelatin to set for several hours.
